Temperatures at the Redding Municipal Airport hit 112 degrees this afternoon, smashing the July 7, 1989 record of 108 degrees, said Karl Swanberg, a National Weather Service forecaster.
“It’s possible that the temperature could have climbed slightly higher than that in the later afternoon,” Swanberg said. “But we definitely broke a record.”
Temperature data has been recorded at the airport since 1986. Before that date measurements were taken near downtown Redding. The-all time high temperature for downtown Redding for today’s date was 109 degrees in 1905.

Please folks, bring your dogs or cats indoors out of the heat during heat waves like this.
If you can't do that then make sure they have a dark shady area to lay, and clean cool water at all times.

it must be global warming but read this http://strata-sphere.com/blog/index.php/archives/5589

This is the Redding that I remember, the last few summers have been mild compared to the summers when I was a kid. Maybe once the true Redding summers return some of these transplants will decide it is not such a nice place to retire to.

I agree. We've been lucky the last several years, save a day or two. When I moved here in 1969, it was over 120. My earliest memory as a child in Shasta County is of my parents going out to spray off our roof in Jones Valley (fires nearby),and radio warnings on KRDG to "stay indoors".

Walterwhite...your comments typify the classic "good ole boy" Redding stereotype. I remember moving here 15 years ago and everybody telling me how hot it was, like it was your own little fraternity. Guess what bro, Redding is hot, but nothing compared to Arizona where you go to bed and wake up at 103 degrees with highs over 120 or the Midwest where 95 degrees is sticky wet and you're dripping with sweat after about 30 seconds outside. Keep telling all the "transplants" how hot it is here, I'm sure they're very impressed. I'm sure you scored 8 touchdowns in one game during high school too.

You've got to love it. Redding: One of the only places that when your parking at the store you don't look for the spot closest to the store, you try to find one that's in the shade...

I think it was 10 touchdowns.
Posted by ace3535 on July 7, 2008 at 9:41 p.m.
It was 128 back in 1977

yep, grew up here and remember the heat in July here. Not uncommom for it to fry for 2+ weeks of 110 degrees+. These newbees will get a taste of what their parents used to describe to them about the little whole in the wall town where they used to stop for gas and couldn't believe how hot it was! I really hope it doesn't get that hot for that long because of the fires...but it can and did........Get to the river it is the coolist water.

i remember being 7mos pregnant in 121 degree heat and only having a swamp cooler, i just knew i was gonna die, nah it was just preparing me for natural birth..... lol

I love (traditional) Redding summers... Transplants don't worry... When I moved here in '79, I thought I was in hell, but i've acclimated to the point where the hotter, the better:) (It only takes about ten years to get to that point.)
Unfortunately, the AC in my car died today. Figures. After having a wisdom tooth pulled. Double figures.

Quiet down and admit it -- Redding is HOT. Hottter than it needs to be to cook eggs on the sidewalk. I know the midwest and the southeast and those folks cringe at our temps.
The HOT is also what used to keep folks from migrating -- maybe this summer will make up for the last bunches..........

It has never been 120 in Redding. It's been hot, and "unofficially" hit 119 a couple summers ago (an all-time record), but never 120, much less over 120, much less over 120 for multiple days.

I second that... please keep animals in mind with this heat....
I was at the place of all things plastic (Wal-Mart) the other day when it was about 102; and over the loud speaker I hear "Attention; the owner of a red Chevy Silverado License # XXX; your dog is in distress."
I was livid. Someone would actually take their dog with them in that heat, and leave it in the car to simply cook alive.
I was on my way out anyway, and searched the parking lot for that truck. A window would have been broken and a half-baked dog would have had a new home...
It's called absolute CRUELTY, people. Makes me wanna lock their stupid asses up in a car with the windows up for 30 minutes.... see how they feel.

taueropoo,
You need more hobbies if you're frying eggs on the freakin' pavement!

Hey walterwhite: I'm one *transplant* who moved up here because I love hot summers! :)
.. and besides, what's wrong with transplants anyway, retired or otherwise? I am good person: a hard-working and law abiding member of my community, well-liked in my neighborhood... but I sure can't say the same for some of the locals here.

Being pregnant with a broken cooler in 110+ weather makes for one unhappy mama. By the time the contractors get out here to replace it, is about the time the temps will drop. lol Redding in the summer...love it or leave.
